Regional Wedding Traditions

There are plenty of wedding rituals to choose from when planning your nuptials. Some may be part of your heritage and so non-negotiable, while others may just sound fun!  As you prepare for your big day, the experts at Beneva Weddings have gathered a list of some regional wedding traditions to consider. Who knows? Maybe these ideas will create new customs for your family!

Different regions of the country boast wedding customs that are virtually unheard of in other parts of the country. Here are a few you may not know, and may want to include in your festivities.

The Cake Pull: This New Orleans tradition dates back to the Victorian Era, when single friends of the bride would pull ribbons out of the wedding cake. Each ribbon was attached to a charm symbolizing a wish for the recipient. For a twist on this idea, try adding ribbons and charms to individual cupcakes, or tie charms to individual flowers.

The Cookie Table: A Pittsburgh regional wedding tradition honors Eastern European, German and Italian immigrants. Guests, as well as family members, bring a plate of their favorite cookies to the reception, creating a vast buffet of assorted treats. For a variation on this tradition, invite guests to include their favorite homemade cookie recipe with their wedding present or card.

The House Party: They say it takes a village to raise a child; in Texas the same could be said about putting on a wedding. Between greeting and seating guests, overseeing the guest book, handing out programs and more, there is obviously much to do. Texans often involve more than the bridal party – their “house party” includes all of the friends and relatives that play a role in making the big day happen. Each is honored with a special corsage or boutonniere signifying their responsibility for the day. As with everything in Texas, bigger is better!

The Groom’s Cake: Reaching back to Victorian England, Southern weddings typically include two cakes: the main bridal cake with tiers and white frosting, and the Groom’s cake. This used to be a lighter, fruitier option to the main cake, but can also be a great excuse to include flavors not often found in traditional wedding cake (chocolate peanut butter, for example). This is also a great way to let the groom’s personality shine through, with a sports or music theme, his favorite superhero or garnish with his favorite flowers. Not a cake fan? Try a Groom’s pie, cookie tray, or ice cream bar instead!
